Project Overview
The exhibition catalog STATIC MOTION is a collection of sequence-images that change their state from still to moving depending upon the viewer’s bodily movements. Origins of some of the showcased pieces can be traced back to the 1800s. All these artifacts are considered to be revolutionary and groundbreaking in the field of motion pictures and animations. The exhibition features works by artists like Rufus Butler Seder, Andy Warhol, Eadweard Muybridge, and Salvador Dali.
Flipbooks are a great example of sequence-images. Invention of similar artifacts like the Filoscope was made using the concept of the Flipbook.
The separator Spreads use quotes regarding the concept of motion along with the artwork done by artist Angel Marrero who brings a unique fluidity and motion in his line drawings.
Some other artifacts in the catalog are the Magic Lantern which was probably the earliest ever device produced for viewing image sequences (c. 1820), the first ever 3D Hologram by Salvador Dali (1973), the Lenticular Poster that changes according to the up and down movement of the viewer (2013), and Strobe Animation by Gregory Barsamian that created an illusion of motion with a strobe light (2002).

The lines are printed on a plastic sheet. There is a pocket on the cover that holds this sheet. When moved, back and forth, the design underneath appears to move from small to big.

THE POSTER
The proposed poster is an example of a sequence-image in itself. It is a lenticular poster that has one image on the left and another on the right set in such a way that it shifts from one image to another as the viewer moves from left to right. A typical place to place the poster would be the New York Subway station like shown in the photo or any areas with high footfall and sufficient waiting time for the viewer to interact with the poster.
